The Manila casino was attacked by a lone gunman shortly after midnight. The gunman shot himself and set himself on fire. Police suspect it was a case of robbery.

A lone gunman burst into a Manila casino, fired shots and set gaming tables alight, sowing panic in a country on high alert after martial law was declared in the south.

Police said earlier the man's motive was likely robbery and that the incident was not terror-related. It appeared the suspect had killed himself after firing at armed officers who were searching the building.

Patients were moved to the San Juan de Dios hospital reported suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation and some had injuries such as fractures. None had gunshot wounds.
