Kashmir covered in blanket of snow, flights suspended, main highway shut

Kashmir has been receiving moderate to heavy snowfall since Wednesday, making it difficult for the people to about their work.

Fresh snowfall in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir has thrown life out of gear as weathermen have predicted more snow in the next 24 hours.

The National highway which connects Kashmir from rest of the world remained shut for the second continuous day, hampering the supply of essentials in the valley. 

Flight operations from the Srinagar airport have also been hit since Wednesday. 

All flights have been cancelled from the Srinagar as the runway wasn't clear for the aircraft to take off.

The administration used the traditional method of spraying salt on roads to make them functional.

Several accidents were reported from different parts as the metrological department has predicted more snow in coming 24 hours.

"Persistence of the weather system over Jammu and Kashmir, most likely for next 24 hours. Thereafter decrease in precipitation," a MeT official told WION.

This winter, Kashmir has witnessed an unusual weather system with frequent snow and rainfall, raising concerns about the effects of global warming in the state.
