On August 5, 2018, another powerful 6.9 magnitude quake hit Lombok, killing over 400 people and prompting tourists to leave the resort island.

Another earthquake of magnitude 7.2 struck on August 19, 2018, near the island causing many casualties. Lombok suffered from three hits in the same month. 

On December 22, a Krakatau-triggered tsunami killed more than 400 people.

More than hundred homes and other buildings were "heavily damaged" when the tsunami struck along the rim of the Sunda Strait late on Saturday, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the disaster mitigation agency, said.

Hundreds of people are still stranded on the various islands in the Sunda Strait. The rescue agency has informed that they will soon be airlifted or taken by boat.

On June 18, 2018, a ferry carrying nearly 200 people sunk in North Sumatra's Lake Toba, one of the world's deepest volcanic lakes, where only close to 20 people are rescued.

Many passengers are believed to have been trapped inside the overloaded ferry that is now submerged around 450-meter under water.

On October 29, 2018, Lion Air flight JT610 carrying 189 on board, crashed into the Java sea 13 minutes after taking off from Jakarta.

Investigation of the crash focused mainly on potential maintenance problems including a faulty sensor.

The incident prompted Boeing and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to evaluate pilots' procedures for the new 737 MAX aircraft.
 

2018 has been a destructive year for Indonesia. Apart from the major disasters, at least 15 people died on June 13 when two boats sank in waters.

In May, a family of six launched suicide attacks on Christians attending Sunday services at three churches in Indonesia's second-largest city, Surabaya, killing at least 13 people and wounding 40. A suicide bomber on a motorbike injured several policemen outside a police building, one day after deadly churches attack.

A fire erupted on April 25 at an illegal oil well killing at least 18 people and injuring 41 as they scrambled to collect oil after the well overflowed.

On February 6, 2018, over 6000 residents in Jakarta were evacuated due to floods caused by torrential rain.
