Pakistan formally agreed to let the family of Kulbhushan Jadhav, an Indian who has been jailed in Pakistan on espionage charges, after pressure from New Delhi.

Pakistan formally agreed to let the family of Kulbhushan Jadhav, an Indian who has been jailed in Pakistan on espionage charges, after pressure from New Delhi.

Jadhav's mother and wife reached Islamabad on Monday to meet him. They were accompanied by India's deputy high commissioner JP Singh and a woman Pakistani official.

Pakistan had made tight security arrangements for the meeting. Pakistan Rangers, Anti-Terrorism squads and sharp shooters were deployed in the buildings of the area where the meeting was held.

The meeting, which started at around 2pm, lasted for 45 minutes.

Pakistan's foreign office tweeted the pictures from the meeting where Mr Jadhav can be seen communicating with his wife Chetankul and mother Avanti over intercom, separated by a glass screen.

Pakistan had said it was permitting the meeting "as a humanitarian gesture, on the birthday of the Father of the nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah."

This was the first meeting between Jadhav and his family since his arrest on March 3 last year for alleged espionage.
