Highlights from India's 72nd Republic Day celebrations

On January 2021, India celebrated its 72nd Republic Day which is marked annually in honour of India's Constitution being implemented on this day in 1950. However, this year - the celebrations were muted due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Even then, patriotism was running high, elevated through performances and display of India's military might. India honours its soldiers

India displayed its military capability at Rajpath in front of all state officials and guests, while honouring brave soldiers from different organs of the country's military including the Air Force, Navy, and Army.

State tableaux highlight diversity

Every year, different territories and states of the country get an opportunity to highlight their culture in the form of tableaux, pacing across Rajpath complemented by performances.

Ladakh's entry into the parade

This marked the first time the Union Territory of Ladakh joined the celebrations with a tableau of its own since the state of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two union territories.

Performances bring joy

As is the case every year, students from across the country joined in on the celebrations, performing across the Rajpath, leading to India Gate, where the parade culminated.

Coronavirus prevention measures in full swing

Owing to the ongoing pandemic, celebrations were muted. Only a limited number of guests could be seen seated along Rajpath, and government officials were seen donning masks, and following social distancing.

Rafale jets graze the skies

PM Modi present at the ceremony

Along with other government dignitaries including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present at the ceremony. He also paid homage to fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial.

First parade without guest in 55 years

This marked the first parade without a Chief Guest since 1955. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was slated to attend the ceremony, but had to pull out owing to the ongoing pandemic.
