From 'Super 30' to 'Manikarnika', biopic films that made a buzz in 2019

Biopics have always been a favorite of Bollywood but this year proved to be extra special as filmmakers experimented with stories of real people that went beyond the norm. Moving away from just sports personalities or actors, biopics in 2019 varied from stories of political personalities to historical characters to much more. Here's a look at some that remained in headlines for good or bad.


 

Accidental Prime Minister

Vijay Ratnakar Gutte directorial tells the story of Manmohan Singh's tenure as the Prime Minister of India. The movie is based on the book of the same name by Sanjaya Baru. The biopic stars Anupam Kher in a lead role and was able to gross Rs 94.80 crore in India.

PM Narendra Modi

Omung Kumar's 'PM Narendra Modi' traces the journey of present Prime Minister of India from his tea-selling days to his taking oath as India's 16th Prime Minister. After a lot of controversies, the film was able to get released on May 2019. The film stars Vivek Oberoi as PM Narendra Modi and was able to collect over Rs 23 crore worldwide.

Super 30 

Director Vikas Bahl tells the inspiring story of Patna-based mathematician Anand Kumar played by Hrithik Roshan, who is attempting to change the lives of meritorious students, 30 at a time. The biopic grossed over Rs 146 crore at the box office.

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019)

'Manikarnika' takes you back to the battlefield of brave Queen Rani Laxmibai and tells the story of her mutiny against the Britishers.

Kangana Ranaut nailed the performance as Queen of Jhansi.

Thackeray

'Thackeray' is the biographical account of Shiv Sena Supremo, Balasaheb Thackeray. The movie narrates the journey of Shiv Sena Supremo from a cartoonist for a newspaper to a leader of Mumbai.  Abhijit Panse dictatorial stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Thackeray. The movie was able to gross Rs 18.19 crore at the box office.

The Sky Is Pink

Based on a true story, Shonali Bose directorial 'The Sky is Pink' tells the story of motivational speaker Aisha Chaudhary played by Zaira Wasim. Aisha tells the love story of her parents played by Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar over a period of 25 years. Even after heavy star cast and critics support, the movie was not able to perform well at the box office and managed to collect Rs 34.41 crore worldwide.

Saand Ki Aankh

'Saand Ki Aankh' takes you to the journey of real-life sharpshooters, Chandro and Prakash Tomar played by Bhumi Pednekar and Taapsee Pannu from the small town Baghpat,   Director Tushar Hiranandani's directorial tells an inspiring tale of simple village women to become the oldest women sharpshooters in the world. The film was a single female-dominated movie in the 2019 Diwali weekend and despite three clashes the movie managed to collect Rs 23.40 crore at the box office.
