'End of an era' as Roma's 'beating heart' Daniele De Rossi set to leave club after 18 years

AS Roma's combative midfielder Daniele De Rossi will end his playing career at the club after 18 years, during which he made 615 appearances and scored 63 goals in all competitions

AS Roma's combative midfielder Daniele De Rossi has announced to leave the club at the end of the season. 

De Rossi has spent his entire senior career with his hometown team coming through the club's academy system.

615 appearances scoring 63 goals

Rossi made 615 appearances and scored 63 goals for Roma in his 18 year long career.

"We will all shed tears when he pulls on the Giallorossi (yellow-and-red) shirt for the last time against Parma but we respect his desire to prolong his playing career - even if, at almost 36, it will be away from Rome," said club president James Pallotta.

"For 18 years, Daniele has been the beating heart of AS Roma's team," said club president Jim Pallotta said.

The club confirmed in a statement that Roma's final game of the season - at home to Parma - would be his last for the club.

Took over the captain's armband

He took over the captain's armband from club legend Francesco Totti – the one player ahead of him for Roma appearances – in 2017.

On 10 April 2018, he scored from the penalty spot during a 3–0 Champions League win over FC Barcelona to help Roma overturn a 4–1 deficit from the first leg.

The result was the joint-second largest comeback in the tournament's history and saw Roma advance to the semi-finals for the first time in the Champions League era.

Graduate of AS Roma's academy

A graduate of the club's academy and a Roma supporter during his childhood, he made his debut in the 2001-02 season.

He soon established himself as a permanent member of the starting line-up in the holding midfield position during the next few seasons, and was considered one of the most promising young Italian players in the league.

Won Coppa Italia and Supercoppa with AS Roma

Daniele de Rossi won the Coppa Italia in 2007 and 2008, and the Supercoppa in 2007 with AS Roma.

Roma won the Coppa Italia trophy in 2007 with an aggregate result of 7–4 against  Inter Milan where de Rossi scored a goal.

Roma won the Supercoppa Italiana also against Inter, with De Rossi scoring the decisive goal from a penalty in a 1–0 victory in Milan.

Serie A Young Footballer of the Year in 2006

He was named Serie A Young Footballer of the Year in 2006.

The Serie A Young Footballer of the Year given to the footballer to the under-24 footballer who has been considered to have performed the best over the previous Serie A season.
