Do Indians have trust in democracy?

Indian democracy is a mixed bag. In cases better than the US but also a poor ranker than Pakistan.

Indians live in a flawed democratic system

Only 19 countries, comprising of less than 5 per cent of the world population live in full democracy, while around 78 per cent of the population lives in flawed or a non-democratic setup.

India as per the index falls under a flawed democracy with less than 80 per cent scores on different parameters.

Norway is the best democracy in the world

As per the Democracy Index, 2016, Norway is the best democracy in the world while North Korea is placed at the end of the list.

India stood 32nd on the list with Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh being at 111th, 66nd and 84th rank respectively.

Quran vs. Democracy

More than having a desire for democracy, people in the Islamic nations, such as Pakistan favour Quran based regime.

As per a study done by the Pew Research, in Pakistan, 82 per cent favoured following Quran strictly. Whereas only 42 per cent people showed a desire for democracy.

Compared to India and USA, Pakistan has more women in its parliament

Participation of women in Indian democracy is very low. Less than 10% women are members of India's Parliament. In terms of women participation India ranked 148th in the world.

Pakistan, on the other hand, although being a more conservative nation, has 20 per cent women participation in parliament. The USA is ranked 104 with 19.4 per cent women participation.

India's electoral process is nearly perfect

As per the Index, the political culture in India is much worse than many other countries with just a score of 5.6 out of 10 on this parameter.

However, the electoral process in India which has been widely acclaimed all over the world has scored 9.6 out of 10. It has helped India to acquire the 32nd position in the overall ranking.

Indians trust their democratic system more than Americans

India's democracy might be considered as flawed but the people of the country have fair levels of trust in the Indian democratic system.

India stands at 3rd position on this parameter with Switzerland and Indonesia being the top two. On the other hand, only 30 per cent people in the USA have trust on their system.

Nepal is the youngest democratic state in the world

The USA was declared a free, sovereign and independent state from the British empire with the signing of the Paris treaty with Britain on 3rd Sep 1783.

India and Pakistan got independence from the British rule in 1947, and were declared democratic in 1950 and 1956 respectively. Nepal is the youngest among democratic nations till date.
