Amit Shah, Gautam Gambhir, Mimi Chakraborty: A look at first-time Lok Sabha poll winners

Cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad, Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans and Bengali actress Mimi Chakraborty were among the candidates registered their maiden victory in the recent general election. Here is a look at the list of first time MPs.

Amit Shah

Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah won his maiden Lok Sabha election by a huge margin of 5.57 lakh votes from Gandhinagar in Gujarat this election, bettering senior party leader L K Advani's margin of 4.83 lakh votes in 2014.

A trusted Lieutenant of Narendra Modi, Shah has been working with the party from a very long time. Before this, Shah has handled several key portfolios in the Gujarat government including home ministry. He has also served as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for 20 years.

Gautam Gambhir

Cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir of the BJP won by 3 Lakh plus votes from East Delhi where he was fielded against Arvinder Singh Lovely of Congress and Atishi Marlena of AAP.

The poll campaign in East Delhi was filled with controversies with the Atishi accusing Gambhir of distributing defamatory pamphlets against her.

Ravi Shankar Prasad

Union minister and Rajya Sabha MP Ravi Shankar Prasad, who was in the fray from Patna Sahib, defeated his former colleague and Congress candidate Shatrughan Sinha by a margin of over 2.84 lakh, registering his first victory in a general election.

Hans Raj Hans

The BJP's Northwest Delhi candidate and former singer, Hans Raj Hans, clobbered his closest rival, Gugan Singh of the AAP, with a massive margin of over 5.5 lakh . 

The Padma Shree awardee, Hans made his political debut with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and contested the Lok Sabha elections from Jalandhar in 2009, but faced defeat.

He later shifted his allegiance to the Congress but quit the party after his name was dropped at the eleventh hour in favour of former Punjab Congress chief Shamsher Singh Dullo for Rajya Sabha.

Pragya Singh Thakur

From her controversial entry into the poll fray to defeating Congress veteran Digvijay Singh in Bhopal, Pragya Singh Thakur of the BJP was perhaps the most talked about the candidate of this general election.

She won by a huge margin of 3,64,822 votes. She joined BJP in April this year.

Mimi Chakraborty

In Bengal, actress Mimi Chakraborty scripted a maiden triumph on a TMC ticket in Lok Sabha polls over Anupam Hazra of the BJP by a margin of over 2.95 lakh votes in Jadavpur constituency.

A well-known face in a Bengali cinema, the actress made her debut in politics in this election season.

Nusrat Jahan Ruhi

Another actress and TMC candidate from Basirhat, Nusrat Jahan Ruhi won with over 3.39 lakh against her BJP rival Sayantan Basu. While Basu managed only 3.77 lakh votes.

West Bengal unit of the BJP Dilip Ghosh also registered a win over TMC's Manas Ranjan Bhunia by a margin of 88,952 votes.

Sunny Deol

Actor-turned-politician and BJP candidate from Gurdaspur, Sunny Deol scored a thumping win from his parliamentary constituency on Thursday.

Deol defeated his nearest candidate Sunil Jakhar by 82,459 votes. Son of legendary actor Dharmendra, Sunny Deol joined BJP in April this year.
