Adelaide to Johannesburg: India's five best Test wins under Virat Kohli's captaincy

Virat Kohli brought an end to his seven-year stint as the Test captain of the Indian cricket team on Saturday (January 15). He led the team to some of the most memorable wins at home and away from home. Here is a look at India's best wins under Kohli's talismanic leadership in the longest format.

India kicked off their 2018-19 tour of Australia with a thrilling win in the series-opener at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide. India rode on Cheteshwar Pujara's brilliant 123 to post 250 runs on the board in the first innings before bundling out Australia for 235 runs in their first innings.

Pujara followed up his century with a fifty in the second innings to help India score 307 runs and set up a target of 323 runs for the hosts. The Indian bowlers stood tall and bowled out the Aussies for 291 to help India win by 31 runs. The win paved way for India's maiden Test series win on Australian soil as Kohli became the first Indian captain to achieve the feat.

Virat Kohli's first-ever Test win as India's Test captain in South Africa came at The Wanderers in Johannesburg in 2018. India had already lost the series after back-to-back defeats in the first two Tests and headed into the third and final Test in Johannesburg with an aim to avoid a clean sweep.

India managed to post only 187 runs on the board in the first innings but Jasprit Bumrah's fifer helped them restrict South Africa on 194. Crucial knocks from captain Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane helped India score 247 runs in their second innings before Mohammed Shami ripped through the South African batting line-up with a fifer in their second innings. India bowled out the hosts for 177 runs to win the game by 63 runs.

After suffering a crushing 333-run defeat in the series-opener in Pune, India were under significant pressure heading into the second game against Australia in Bengaluru. The hosts got off to a poor start and could only manage 189 runs in their first innings. Australia responded with a total of 274 runs in their first innings.

KL Rahul, who had notched up a gritty 90 in the first innings, once again shone with the bat and slammed a half-century to help India post 274 runs in their second innings. The odds were stacked up against the hosts as they had set up a moderate target of 188 runs for the Aussies. However, R Ashwin bowled a sensational spell and claimed a si-wicket haul to power India to a sensational win levelling the four-match series 1-1. India went on to clinch the series 2-1.

India absolutely mauled West Indies in the Rajkot Test of the home series in 2018. Virat Kohli, Prithvi Shaw and Ravindra Jadeja slammed centuries apiece to help India post a massive total of 649 runs, batting first. West Indies were batted out of the game and the Indian bowlers ensured they had not chance of making a comeback.

R Ashwin claimed four wickets in the first innings as West Indies were skittled out for 181 runs before being asked to follow-on. Kuldeep Yadav then ran through the visitors' batting line-up in the second innings with a five-wicket haul to bundle them out for 196 runs as India won by an innings and 242 runs - their biggest Test win in terms of margin.

One of India's best overseas Test wins under Virat Kohli came against at the iconic Lord's Stadium last year. After a draws first game, India bounced back in style at Lord's as they batted superbly in difficult conditions to take a lead in the series. KL Rahul's ton helped India post 329 runs on the board in their first innings.

England rode on Joe Root's splendid 180 to score 391 runs and take a lead. Indian tail-enders then staged a memorable fightback in their second innings as fighting knocks from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami helped India post 298 runs in their second innings. In reply, England were bolwed out for 120 as Indian pacers ran riot to power the visitors to a thumping win by 151 runs.
