89 years of the Dandi satyagraha

On March 12, 1930, Mahatma Gandhi along with a group of Satyagrahis started the famous 'Dandi March' from Sabarmati Ashram. The movement gained worldwide attention and boosted the morale of the Indian Independence movement.

89th anniversary of Dandi March

March 12, 2019, marks the 89th anniversary of the Dandi Satyagraha, an act of non-violent civil disobedience movement led by Mahatma Gandhi in colonial India.

Bapu had undertaken a 26-day march from March 12, 1930, to April 6, 1930, as a direct action campaign of tax resistance and non-violent protest against the British salt monopoly.

Huge momentum to India's independence movement

The 24-day journey started on March 12, 1930, to protest against the tax levy on salt by the British.

The march added huge momentum to India's independence movement. While 78 people began the almost 400 km-march with Gandhi, many more joined along the way.

'Dandi Salt Challenge'

The year will later witness 'Dandi Salt Challenge' which will be celebrated in Gujarat on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The celebration will see the holding of endurance events like cycling and a marathon run on the famous 400-km Dandi March route.

Dandi Salt Challenge

The 'Dandi Salt Challenge 2019' is the brainchild of Tushar Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson and some professionals from different fields.

The challenge is organised to popularise the Dandi march route and promote fitness.

150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

This year's Republic Day celebration also marked the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The tableaux from various states of the country showed various facets of Gandhi's life.
