Virat Kohli slammed a much-needed ton that inspired India to victory

South Africa won the toss and opted to bat

It was a perfect decision for the Proteas, as the wicket looked fine at that time.

A powerful partnership

Kohli and Rahane came together and did not give the Proteas a sniff.

Imran Tahir (0/51) was duly taken for runs, while JP Duminy (0/16) and Markram (0/20) had no impact in their short spells.

The most vital aspect of this partnership was the running between wickets.

The duo looked to cut down on errors, calling loud and clear. They brought their 100-stand off 112 balls.

Splendid skipper

After Shikhar Dhawan's wicket, India was under pressure to some extent, as skipper was struggling with a knee injury in the first innings.

Dhawan's unfortunate wicket was due to a miscommunication with Kohli, and the amazing throw of Markram.

But Captain Kohli, a 'chase master', smashed his 33rd hundred to lead India to a six-wicket victory.

Mysterious expression but happy for sure

If we talk about history, India has never won an ODI match in Kingsmead, Durban, and that added to pressure on coach Ravi Shastri, captain Kohli and the team but 'Men in blue' came out of it like a champion.

South Africa are on top of the ICC ODI rankings by a slender one point from India. Altogether, it's a really good opportunity for team India to grab the number 1 spot.

Advice from the captain

Hardik Pandya proved bit expensive, but Virat Kohli gave him some piece of advice that might have helped Hardik in letting go the pressure.

Hardik gave 41 runs in seven overs and did not take any wicket.

Bowling attack

Faf du Plessis played exceptionally well and scored 120 off 112 for his team.

But Indian bowlers kept taking regular wickets.

India decided to play three seamers, and three spinners in the first ODI.

Kohli was banking on his spinners.

Spinners outspun the Proteas

Recently, Virat had emphasised that spinners give results on any pitch, abroad as well as on home soil.

And that's exactly what happened. Kuldeep Yadav took three crucial wickets of David Miller, JP Duminy and Chris Morris and Chahal got 2 - of Markram and Quinton de Kock.
