With 1,990 new cases, India witnesses highest coronavirus cases in 24-hour period

As many as 1,990 new coronavirus cases were reported in India, the highest surge in cases in the 24-hour period.

With the latest figures confirmed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, coronavirus infections in India stand at 26,496, including 824 deaths. Also, 49 new deaths were reported in India in the last 24 hours. 

At least 5,804 people have been cured or discharged or migrated in the country, according to the health ministry figures. 

The latest spike in cases comes after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) allowed some businesses to reopen from Saturday, with conditions that social distancing and safety precautions must be taken. 

Meanwhile, both in terms of deaths and cases, Maharashtra continues to remain the worst-hit Indian state with 7,628 coronavirus cases and 323 deaths, followed by Gujarat with 3,071 cases and 133 fatalities.   

Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan have recorded 2,625, 2,095, and 2,083 cases respectively. In Madhya Pradesh, 99 people have died from the disease, while Delhi has reported 54 fatalities. 

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation today in his monthly radio program "Mann Ki Baat" where he is expected to share some insights on the way forward.

India had earlier extended the 21-day lockdown till May 3 and on April 27, the PM will hold a virtual conference with the chief ministers where discussions would be taken on the status of lockdown.
