When DMK pulled out of UPA because of the LTTE 

The issue of Sri Lankan Tamils' interest for a different country or the 'Tamil Eelam' has dependably had a solid reverberation in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

When in 2008-2009, the Sri Lankan Army moved for the final attack to weed out LTTE unequivocally, charges of 'violation of human rights' and 'massacre' of ethnic Tamils surfaced. The affirmations were fortified by claims in the media.

Aware of M Karunanidhi's soft corner for LTTE chief V Prabhakaran, the UPA did not think it politically prudent to annoy the DMK patriarch by openly supporting the Sri Lankan government against the LTTE.

The DMK wanted the Indian govt to back a strongly-worded resolution in the UNHRC against Sri Lanka, seeking an international, independent probe against Sri Lanka. It also wanted the use, in the resolution, of stronger terms like 'genocide' and 'war crimes'.

The DMK had decided to pull out of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government after three top Union ministers failed to satisfy M Karunanidhi, the DMK supremo, with the wording of the resolution.

Many times Karunanidhi had courted controversies for supporting the LTTE and other outfits that wished to break from Sri Lanka – the Jain Commission that probed the 1991 Rajiv Gandhi assassination had even indicted the Karunanidhi government of abetting the militant outfit of the island nation.

Although the DMK chief was acquitted, he had later claimed in an interview that he was ‘good friends’ with Prabhakaran.
