Kolkata professor says virgin girls are like 'sealed bottles', gets slammed

A social media post by a professor in Kolkata has angered people. In his Facebook post, which has now been deleted, Jadavpur University professor Kanak Sarkar compared "virgin girls" to "sealed bottles."

As per media reports, Sarkar in his post asked if men would buy a packet of biscuit or a bottle of water or cola with a broken seal, drawing an analogy to female virginity. 

The post was titled 'Virgin Bride - Why Not? (Value oriented social counselling for educated youth.'

While Sarkar continues to face a backlash for his comments, he is reported to have been defending his remarks under the garb of 'freedom of expression.'

Sarkar, on his Facebook account, has been highlighting his comments and remarks previously made in favour for women. 

"I write my personal opinion. Supreme Court has repealed section 66A of IT Act and given freedom of expression in Social Media... Feminists also abuse men and patriarchy in seminar and Media," Sarkar noted in one of his social posts.

"It's everybody's right to express his /her thoughts. I have given many posts for and in favour of women. Can verify them in my Timeline," he added.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women has asked the West Bengal DGP to probe and take appropriate action in the alleged case of a Jadavpur University professor, news agency PTI reported. 

The NCW took suo motu cognisance of the professor's "shocking misogynistic" lessons and asked the West Bengal DGP to probe the matter and take appropriate action in the case and apprise the commission of it.
