Watch: 900 Indian pilgrims head to Pakistan to celebrate the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak

A group of 900 Sikh pilgrims on Thursday left for Pakistan from Amritsar to celebrate the birth anniversary Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism.

The pilgrims will mark Guru Nanak's 548th birth anniversary on Saturday (November 4) at Nankana Sahib, his birthplace, in Pakistan's Punjab province.

Before heading out on the pilgrimage, the pilgrims offered prayers at the Golden Temple, Sikhism's holiest shrine.

This is the first time I am going and I am very excited, said a pilgrim, Manjeet Kaur.

Guru Nanak, the first Sikh guru, was born in Nankana Saheb on the full moon day in 1469 in the 'Kartik' month of the Hindu calendar. His birthday is celebrated as 'Guru Nanak Jayanti'.

Sikhism was founded in the 15th century in the Punjab, an area straddling the border between Pakistan and India, by Guru Nanak and has had 10 successive gurus. Punjab is the only area in the world with a majority Sikh population.
