Drivers of government-run buses in Kolkata were seen wearing helmets as bandh supporters resorted to vandalism.
CPM supporters clashed with the police today morning when the latter tried to prevent them from carrying out a rally in Kolkata’s Jadavpur area. Police arrested several CPM supporters and leaders including senior leader Sujan Chakraborty following the incident.
In North Bengal’s Coochbehar district, a Dinhata bound bus was vandalised by bandh supporters. The driver and few passengers suffered minor injuries. Buses were also vandalised in Bengal’s Birbhum and Howrah district.
Train services were affected in parts of Bengal as bandh supporters threw banana leaves on train overhead wires to hinder their movement. The Howrah-Puri Shatabdi Express was also cancelled due to the obstruction on the rail line.
On the Sealdah-Bongaon line’s Habra station, as many as five crude bombs were recovered from the rail tracks. GRP has rushed to the spot to recover the bombs and clear the tracks for movement of trains.
