A 27-year-old man in Kerala's Palakkad district was beaten to death by a mob after complaints of alleged stealing.

The victim, identified as Madhu, was allegedly beaten with sticks and was handed over to the police.

According to reports, the man was an accused of theft in 2016 and was infamous for stealing rice and other food items from shops. (WION)

The police took him to the hospital after his health deteriorated but the doctors declared him dead on arrival.

However, a report quoted the mother of the 27-year-old deceased saying that Madhu was not a thief, instead, he was of "unsound mind". 

The police have registered an FIR under section 174 CrPC against unknown people.

They have also launched an investigation into the matter. The police will also conduct the postmortem of the body. 

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan also reacted to the incident saying "This heinous act is a blot on Kerala’s progressive society". He also added that two suspects were in police custody.
