Umar Khalid attack: Delhi Police Special Cell to investigate case

The investigation of the case of the JNU student Umar Khalid who was shot at in Delhi's Constitution Club has been transferred to Delhi Police Special Cell, ANI reported on Tuesday. 

Khalid was shot at the gate of the Constitution Clun on Rafi Marg in Delhi on Monday. He was unhurt in the shooting. 

The incident, which took place around 2.30 pm, came two days before Independence Day when the city is on security alert.

The man suspected to have attacked Khalid was identified on CCTV on Tuesday. He was wearing jeans, sneakers and a white shirt. The attacker dropped the weapon and fled the spot 

Umar had been scheduled to speak at the club at an event called, ironically, "Freedom from Fear". 

Meanwhile, Khalid on Tuesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to "please state" that he guarantees the safety of people who criticise his government and "its many failures". 

Taking to Twitter, Omar wrote: "Modi Ji, you had asked for suggestions for your IDay speech. I have a suggestion to make - can you please state that you gurantee that there will be no attack on those who criticize your govt & its many failures."

Umar's tweet contained a link to his statement — written on Facebook — on the attack on him. 

The student leader had recently filed a complaint with the Delhi Police that he and Gujarat's Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani had received death threats from a man who identified himself as fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari in June.
