Triple Talaq Bill deferred in Parliament, likely to get tabled in next session

The Cabinet on Thursday approved an amendment in the draft law which introduces the provision wherein a magistrate can grant bail to the guilty.

Triple Talaq bill could not be tabled in Parliament on Friday due to non-consensus. Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu noted that no consensus could be built around it today.

The bill is now likely to be tabled in the next Parliamentary session. 

Meanwhile, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Friday stated that Congress' stand on the bill is clear. 

"Our party's position is absolutely clear on this, I will not say anything on the matter," Gandhi noted.

The Cabinet on Thursday approved an amendment in the draft law which introduces the provision wherein a magistrate can grant bail to the guilty.

"Cabinet has approved amendments in the law relating to triple talaq. We've proposed 3 changes. If any husband gives triple talaq instantaneously and breaks the marriage then an FIR shall only become cognizable when it is filed by victim or blood relation or relation by marriage," Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told media today.
