Har Gobind Khorana honoured in Google doodle

Google doodle honoured Indian American biochemist, Har Gobind Khorana who shared 1968 Nobel Prize for physiology or medician with Marshall W Nirenberg and Robert W Holley on his 96th birthday.

Hailing from Raipur, today in Pakistan, Khorana did significant research on the order of nucleotides in nucleic acids which carry the genetic code of the cell that controls the cell's synthesis of proteins which helped him to win the Nobel prize.

Khorana served on the faculty of the University of British Columbia from 1952 to 1960 where he also initiated his Nobel Prize-winning work.

The biochemist also received the National Medal of science and co-directed the Institute for enzyme research.

Khorana was also elected as a foreign member of the Royal Society in 1978.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison, DBT Department of Biotechnology of the Indian government and the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum jointly created the Khorana Program in 2007 with the mission to build "seamless community" of scientists, industrialists, and social entrepreneurs in the United States and India.

The program is focused on three objectives - providing graduate and undergraduate students with a transformative research experience, engaging partners in rural development and food, security, and facilitating public-private partnerships between the US and India.

Khorana died in 2011 at the age of 89 in Concorde, US.
