As the world rings in the New Year, UNICEF has released a report on the number of newborns on the New Year's day.
As per the report released on December 31, 2018, over three lakh babies will be born on the New Year's day today. What is shocking is the fact that India tops the list with the highest number of births on January 1 with around 69,944 newborns.
The list has China at the second spot, with 44,940 babies, followed by Nigeria, Pakistan, Indonesia and the United States coming at the fifth spot.
An estimated 395, 072 babies will be born around the world on New Year’s Day, UNICEF said in its release, adding that a quarter of the total number will be born in South Asia alone.
"As the clock strikes midnight, Sydney will greet an estimated 168 babies, followed by 310 in Tokyo, 605 in Beijing, 166 in Madrid and finally, 317 in New York," UNICEF's release read.
"Fiji in the Pacific will most likely deliver 2019’s first baby; the United States, its last. Globally, over half of these births are estimated to take place in eight countries," it added.
The report throws a spotlight on the burgeoning state of population in India which stands second in the world, right after China, with over 1.2 billion people.
