Can remain part of China only if it recognises Tibet's culture: Dalai Lama

Days after the Tibetians highlighted the increased repression of the Chinese government on Tibet in the National Uprising day, Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama claimed on Sunday that Tibet can remain in China, only if Beijing recognised and respected the region's distinct culture and autonomy.

The Dalai Lama said  "Historically and culturally, Tibet has been independent. China took control of Tibet in 1950 in what it called a 'peaceful liberation'. So, as long as the Constitution of China recognises our culture and Tibetan autonomous region's special history, it (Tibet) can remain there."

Dalai Lama was speaking at a lecture on 'Role of Ethics and Culture in Promoting Global Peace and Harmony' in New Delhi.

Tibetans recently staged protests in parts of India and outside the United Nations office in Geneva, Switzerland highlighting the suppression of Tibetans by China.

Over 150 Tibetans have self-immolated themselves since 2009 due to the repressive policies of the Chinese government, reports suggest. 

The Dalai Lama, along with his followers, fled to India in 1959 after the invasion of Tibet by China.

While the Dalai Lama has time and again backed the idea of  "One China", China calls the 82-year-old Buddhist monk a "separatist", seeking to secede Tibet from China.
