The spellings were changed after a committee was made especially to make sure that the experts sit down with districts heads and make sure that the spellings of the localities match the Tamil names.

Some main names that have been changed are: Coimbatore is now Koyampuththoor, Egmore is now Ezhumboor, Puducherry is now Puthucherry, Vellore is now Veeloor, Saidapet is now Saithaappettai, Chintadripet is now Chinthadharipettai and so on.

While the locals were going through the changes made, twitter came up with memes regarding this change amid a pandemic.
