Tamil Nadu chief minister E Palaniswamy announced Rs 4 lakh solatium for the next of kin of the deceased, Rs one lakh for people with serious injuries and Rs 50,000 for those with minor injuries.

Earlier in the day, the chief minister said that the trekkers who were caught in the forest fire in the Western Ghat's Kurangani Hill ranges did not have permission for an expedition.

Those killed in the fire were a part of a 36-member that comprised 24 people from Chennai and 12 from Tiruppur and Erode districts.
