Supreme Court defers hearing on Vedanta's Sterlite copper plant plea to January 29

The Supreme Court of India on Thursday said that it will resume the hearing on Vedanta's plea regarding Sterlite copper plant at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu on January 29, ANI reported.
According to media reports, the Apex Court on Thursday ordered the Tamil Nadu government to immediately provide power supply to the Sterlite plant in Tuticorin.
The top court had earlier this month refused to stay the green tribunal’s order of setting aside the state government’s decision to close Vedanta’s Sterlite copper plant at Tuticorin.
On 15 December, the NGT had set aside the Tamil Nadu government order for closure of mining company Vedanta Ltd’s Sterlite copper plant at Tuticorin saying it was “non-sustainable" and “unjustified".
The Tamil Nadu government had, on 28 May, ordered the state pollution control board to seal and “permanently" close the mining group’s copper plant following violent protests over pollution concerns.
