The Sri Lankan Navy today arrested five Indian fishermen from India's southern city of Rameswaram.

The fishermen were sent to police custody till October 25th by Lanka's Mannar court.

The Indian fishermen are now lodged in Sri Lanka's Vavuniya prison.

Sri Lanka had released seventy-six Indian fishermen a "goodwill gesture" in late August after Tamil Nadu chief minister Palanisamy, in a letter, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene.

Detention of Indian fishermen by Lankan authorities is frequent, as they often cross the international maritime boundary.
