Samajwadi Party announced today former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has been elected as the national president for the next five years.

Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh had earlier announced he wouldn't be part of the party convention at Agra where the announcement of his son Akhilesh as national president was announced.

Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh elections in May, Mulayam Singh had expelled his son Akhilesh Yadav from the Samajwadi Party. Both Akhilesh and Ramgopal were slapped with showcause notices by the party.

"We have to save the party. The party comes first. That is why we are expelling both Akhilesh and Ramgopal," Mulayam had said while announcing Akhilesh's expulsion.

However, the Election Commission recognised Akhilesh Yadav as the leader of the party allocating the Samajwadi Party election symbol 'cycle' to him even as Mulayam Singh protested.

Rejecting the stand of the Mulayam Singh Yadav camp, the election body said there is a clear split in the party.

The Samajwadi party later lost the elections during the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls in May as the BJP swept to power.
