Rohtang tunnel built at 10,000 feet set to open

The construction of the tunnel will be a great help for the people of Lahaul, the tribal district which is covered with snow for six months.

Rohtang tunnel, the first tunnel in the country being constructed at 10,000 feet is complete after seven years of construction. 

The 8.8-kilometer long tunnel connecting Manali with Dhundi is India's longest tunnel. It has been constructed by Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

The construction of the tunnel will be a great help for the people of Lahaul, the tribal district which is covered with snow for six months. 

However, the tunnel will not be in use until 2019.

Colonel N M Chandarana, the chief engineer of Rohtang Tunnel project, Solang said: "The team has without any failures successfully completed the project after hard work of seven years."

He further added that this year during the winters they will devise a plan so that the tribals of Lahula can use the tunnel during an emergency.

The plan will be implemented in collaboration with the local administration.

Rohtang tunnel will be completely in use from 2019.

Defense minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, may visit the tunnel in a few days.
