The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially handed over the invite to South African President in a bilateral on the sidelines of G20.

The South African President  Cyril Ramaphosa will be the chief guest at India's republic day celebration in 2019. 

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially handed over the invite to South African President in a bilateral on the sidelines of G20.

Speaking after the bilateral, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said, "PM extended South Africa Pres Cyril Ramaphosa invitation to be the chief guest for India's Republic Day in 2019 and Ramaphosa accepted"

India will be celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in 2019. A number of programmes have been organised by India to celebrate the anniversary. 

Earlier this year, India invited all 10 heads of the ASEAN grouping for the republic day.
