Congress president Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP of ''inventing story'' on Congress and ''data theft'' to divert attention from the 39 Indians who were slaughtered by the  ISIS in Iraq's Mosul.

Taking to his official Twitter handle, Rahul Gandhi tweeted ''Problem: 39 Indians dead; Govt on the mat, caught lying. Solution: Invent story on Congress & Data Theft. Result: Media networks bite bait; 39 Indians vanish from radar. Problem solved.''

Since the data scandal involving Cambridge Analytica came to light both Congress and BJP have been accusing each other of using the data mining service company's service to win elections.

Responding to Rahul Gandhi's charges, BJP's  Ravi Shankar Prasad at a press briefing in New Delhi on Thursday accused the Congress of maintaining conspicuous silence on their ties with Cambridge Analytica.

He said Rahul Gandhi's entire social media campaign has been managed with the help of Cambridge Analytica.

''Rahul Gandhi's entire social media campaign has been managed with the help of Cambridge Analytica and they have had meetings also,'' Prasad said without producing any proof to buttress his claims.

The BJP on Wednesday accused the Congress of hiring the services of Cambridge Analytica, a data mining firm accused of illegally harvesting Facebook users' details to influence elections in several countries, and wondered if the party would now depend on "data theft" to woo voters.

The Congress, however, denied the charge and instead, accused the ruling party of using the services of the controversial firm. The BJP also rejected the allegation.
