Protests in Jammu and Kashmir after alleged rape of three-year-old girl; accused arrested

The alleged rape of a three-year-old girl has triggered protests and shutdowns in Jammu and Kashmir. 

People in the state have been hitting streets to protest the alleged rape of the girl in north Kashmir's Bandipora district. Protesters clashed with the local police at several locations forcing the police to hurl tear smoke shells. Schools and other business establishments are also shut in the state. 

According to the family of the victim, she was lured by a local youth and later raped in the vicinity. Facing anger, the police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident after arresting the accused. 

People from all walks of life, including the mainstream parties in the state, have condemned the heinous incident and have appealed to the administration to investigate the case at the earliest. Governor Satya Pal Malik has also expressed shock over the incident and asked the police to speed up the probe. 

Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case and are also looking to book the accused under the POCSO Act. The school principal who had issued a fake date of birth certificate to the accused has also been detained for the questioning by the police.
