Protests against director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama Padmaavat turned violent on Tuesday after a group of people vandalised a multiplex in Gujarat's Ahmedabad.

The accused are believed to be members of Karni Sena.

Based on Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic poem Padmavat, the movie is set to release on January 25.

Padmaavat, starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor has repeatedly faced trouble from fringe groups, who allege that the movie is distorting “historical facts” and fear that the movie features a love scene between Khilji (played by Ranveer Singh) and Rani Padmini (Deepika Padukone) as a dream sequence.
