PM Narendra Modi, Amit Shah remember those who resisted Emergency; Mamata Banerjee lashes out at BJP

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid homage to people who resisted the Emergency imposed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on this day in 1975.

"India salutes all those greats who fiercely and fearlessly resisted the Emergency. India's democratic ethos successfully prevailed over an authoritarian mindset," he tweeted with a short video.
 

Home minister Amit Shah also recalled how people were deprived of their fundamental rights during the Emergency. "It was on this day in 1975 that democracy of the country was killed for political interests. Millions of patriots were tortured in their fight to restore democracy. I salute all the fighters," Shah tweeted.
 

Defence minister Rajnath Singh said Emergency was one of the darkest chapters in Indian history. "The declaration of Emergency on June 25, 1975 and the incidents that followed, mark as one of the darkest chapters in India’s history. On this day, we the people of India should always remember the importance of upholding the integrity our institutions and the Constitution," he tweeted.
 

Meanwhile lashing out at BJP, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter and said that while it was the anniversary of Emergency imposed in 1975, the country is going through "super emergency" for the past five years.

"Today is the anniversary of the Emergency declared in 1975. For the last five years, the country went through a 'Super Emergency'. We must learn our lessons from history and fight to safeguard the democratic institutions in the country," Banerjee tweeted.
 

Emergency was imposed in India from June 25, 1975 to March 21, 1977.
