Parliament adjourned for the day over ruckus in both houses

Parliament's Lower and Upper House, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were on Tuesday adjourned till tomorrow after the AIADMK MPs protested demanding the formation of the Cauvery Management Board and other issues.

The Lower House, the Lok Sabha was initially adjourned till 12 pm and later till tomorrow.

In the Rajya Sabha, MPs (Members of Parliament) belonging to the Congress, TMC, BSP, TDP and those of Tamil parties -- DMK and AIADMK, were in the Well even before Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu could settle down in his chair.

Unlike past days when listed papers were allowed to be laid on the table peacefully, Naidu had to go through the exercise today amid chaos as members persisted with slogan shouting.

The Congress and the BSP led the charge against the government, accusing it of being "anti-dalit", an apparent reference to the Supreme Court ruling on the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The main opposition party also raised the issue of India's biggest bank fraud involving the Punjab National Bank (PNB) alongside the TMC. Tamil parties were demanding immediate constitution of the Cauvery Water Management Board for division of river water between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Members of the TDP and KVP Ramachandra Rao of the Congress held placards demanding special status for Andhra Pradesh.

As soon as the Lower House met for the day and took up the Question Hour, AIADMK members rushed into the Well shouting slogans such as "we want justice" and "we demand Cauvery board".

Citing assembly polls in Karnataka, the Centre had sought more time from the Supreme Court last week to set up the board to implement water sharing formula between Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry.

Congress member Kantilal Bhuria and RJD's J P N Yadav were seen waving documents and demanding a review of the Supreme Court order diluting the provisions of immediate arrest under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The Congress party and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) earlier gave adjournment motion notices in the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha.

RJD MP JP Yadav and Congress MP Sushmita Dev gave adjournment motion notices in the Lok Sabha over the leak of the class 10th CBSE maths paper and the class 12th CBSE economics papers.
 

The Congress gave an adjournment motion notice under rule 267 in the Upper House over the nearly Rs 1300 crores Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam by designer jeweller Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi.

The Lok Sabha has previously been adjourned for 15 days without undertaking any significant business due to protests by various Opposition political parties for different reasons including special status for Andhra Pradesh, the SC/ST Act, the PNB scam and the Cauvery water dispute.
