Padmavati: Supreme Court dismisses petition against release of film

The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition against the release of the film Padmavati. 

The Supreme Court, while dismissing the petition, said the Censor Board has not yet issued a certificate to Padmavati. That the board is an independent body and that the Supreme Court should thefore not intervene in its jurisdiction. 

The Rajasthan government had earlier formed a panel to watch the Deepika Padukone-Shahid Kapoor-Ranveer Singh starrer. 

The Rajasthan government had said state Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria would head the panel. 

The Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed movie is about Padmavati, the erstwhile queen of Chittor. 

Rajput groups in Rajasthan have been protesting against the release of the film saying it might dishonour the community. 

Their most strident objections have been to a reported "dream sequence" between Deepika Padukone (playing Padmavati) and Ranveer Singh (playing Allaudin Khilji). 

Historians however say it is possible that Padmavati never existed. 

The first mention of her is found in the 16th-century poem Padmavat by Malik Muhammad Jayasi -- while Padmavati was said to have lived in the 14th century.
