In a first, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) said in a statement that it plans to "speed up the process of making technological breakthroughs in nuclear-powered aircraft carriers."

CSIC had built China's first aircraft carrier, which was launched in April last year and is expected to enter service in 2020.

CSIC said it would be producing "new-type nuclear submarines, quiet submarines, maritime unmanned intelligent confrontation systems, maritime three-dimensional offensive and defensive systems, and naval warfare comprehensive electronic information systems."

China had earlier commissioned a Soviet-built aircraft carrier in 2012 and then it proceeded to make its own aircraft carrier by producing a virtual prototype of the Soviet carrier, the third aircraft carrier is now set to be commissioned over the next two years.

This is the first time a State-owned Chinese defence company has openly identified nuclear-powered aircraft carriers on its agenda, China's state-run Global Times times newspaper said.
