Story highlights

Gadkari had said people like politicians who show them dreams but if those dreams are not fulfilled, then people also thrash those politicians.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has said Union Minister Nitin Gadkari's "sapne dikhaane waale" comment was aimed at the Congress and its president Rahul Gandhi, and not Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The BJP's GVL Narasimha Rao said Gadkari's comments were being "twisted and political benefit being taken out of it".

"He (Gadkari) was hinting towards Congress that only gave slogans of 'Garibi Hatao' but didn't do anything for poverty alleviation and towards Rahul Gandhi who makes empty promises," Rao said.

“Sapne dikhane waale neta logon ko acche lagte hain, par dikhaye hue sapne agar pure nahi kiye to janta unki pitayi bhi karti hai (People like politicians who show them dreams. But if those dreams are not fulfilled, then the people also thrash those politicians),” Gadkari had said on Sunday.

“Isliye sapne wahi dikhao jo pure ho sakein. Main sapne dikhane waale mein se nahi hu. Main jo bolta hu, woh 100 per cent danke ki chot par pura hota hai (That is why you must only show those dreams that can be fulfilled. I am not among those who show dreams. Whatever I say, I fulfill it 100 per cent),” Gadkari had added.

Gadkari made his comments in Mumbai while addressing a gathering to launch a new BJP-affiliated transport outfit — the Navbhartiya Shiv Vahatuk Sanghathana (NSVS).

Speculation has been rife ever since that he was talking about Modi. Most commentators agree that Modi has been able to deliver less in his four-and-a-half years in power than he promised before the 2014 elections.

Gadkari, who is a Sangh favourite, is often seen as a potential successor to Modi.

This is not the first time Gadkari — he is minister of road transport and highways, shipping and water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation — has made "uncomfortable" statements.

He had also said the BJP leadership should own up to the defeats in the Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh state elections. That was thought to be a barb aimed at Prime Minister Modi again and BJP president Amit Shah.
