New H-1B visa proposal may lead to deportation of Indians

The Trump administration is considering introducing a proposal that will restrict extension of H-1B visa. 

The initiative by the public security department of US aims to further President's "Buy America, Hire America" drive. 

The move is likely to affect thousands of Indians working in the country on H-1B visa. The proposal will prevent foreign immigrants without Green Card from working in the US. 

Currently, the immigrants get an extension of over two or three years even if their Green Card is pending. Once the proposal gets approved, about 500,000 to 750,000 Indians working on H-1B visa may have to be deported from the US. 

"The idea is to create a sort of 'self- deportation' of hundreds of thousands of Indian tech workers in the United States to open up those jobs for Americans," said a US source briefed by Homeland Security officials as reported by McClatchy DC Bureau.

The proposal has been initiated by the Department of Homeland Security, the public security department of US.

The proposal has been passed by the House Judiciary Committee and is now awaiting to be cleared by the US Senate. 

According to an estimated figure, about 70 per cent of these visas is given to Indians.The program allows immigrants to work despite having pending Green Card. It has recently received huge criticism from  American workers as they claim that the visa abuses their job opportunities.
