Mumbai reports 1,411 coronavirus cases, 43 deaths in one day; toll rises to 800

Mumbai today reported 1,411 coronavirus cases and 43 deaths in the last 24 hours as the pandemic continued to ravage India's financial capital.

The total number of coronavirus cases now stands at 22,563 in the city with 800 deaths. 

Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope said that the state has been conducting around 15,000 tests for coronavirus every day in 67 testing labs. 

"Death rate in Maharashtra has also come down to 3.2 per cent now." the minister said. "Maharashtra has over 25 per cent recovery rate of coronavirus patients," Tope added.

"We are also planning to take control of 80 per cent beds of all private hospitals in the state to treat coronavirus patients," the minister added.

"Some scarcity of beds for coronavirus patients was felt but now we are prepared. We have 15,000 beds for different categories of COVID-19 patients now and 2,000 beds for ICU," the health minister said while informing that 17,000 vacancies for specialist doctors, nurses and other medical staff would be filled soon. 

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh reported 323 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours taking the total number of cases to 4,926. The death toll in the state has now climbed to 135.

Rajasthan reported 338 new coronavirus cases taking the total number of cases in the state to 5,845. Five people died due to the virus today with the death toll in the state climbing to 143.
