Mumbai fire: Hero cop saves nine, says 'I am sad that those 14 people couldn't be saved'

Mumbai Police's Constable Sudarshan Shivaji Shinde was felicitated Monday for saving as many as nine people from the fire that broke out last week in Mumbai's Kamala Mills complex. 

A picture of Shinde carrying a woman on his shoulder went viral on social media after the incident.  

"It's nice to be acknowledged on the first day of the year, but I am sad that those 14 people couldn't be saved," he said.

Shinde was on patrol duty when he got a call about the fire.

He got to the spot, went upstairs, and found a woman lying on the floor unconscious.

He carried her out. 

He pulled out three more people from the rubble even before the stretchers arrived.

Shinde had to run up seven flights of stairs each time.

Shinde said when he got to the spot, he found it covered with thick black smoke which made it hard for him to see but he carried on. 

Shinde was felicitated by Mumbai Police Commissioner Dattatray Padsalgikar and Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar on Monday. 

"His dream came true."
