Singh, a veteran Congress leader had filed his nomination papers in Rajya Sabha for the by-poll from Rajasthan on Tuesday. 

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday congratulated former prime minister and senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh for being elected as a member of Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan.

"I congratulate former PM Dr Manmohan Singh ji on being elected unopposed as a member of Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan," Gehlot said on Twitter.

Singh, a veteran Congress leader had filed his nomination papers in Rajya Sabha for the by-poll from Rajasthan on Tuesday. 

The seat has been vacant after the death of state BJP president Madan Lal Saini, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha last year when the BJP was in power in the state.

Now, the Congress party is in majority in the legislative assembly.

Earlier, the former Prime Minister represented Assam in the Rajya Sabha for 28 years before his tenure ended earlier this year.

Singh has promised that he will work hard to ensure the interests fo the people of the state are protected.

The polling will be held on August 26 and the results will be declared on the same day, Election Commission has said in a notification issued on August 7.
