Maharashtra reports 1,230 new coronavirus cases, 36 deaths in 24 hours

Maharashtra on Monday reported 1,230 new coronavirus cases with 36 deaths in the last 24 hours taking the death toll to 868 in the state.

There are now 23,401 cases of COVID-19 in the state, Maharashtra's health department said.

In Greater Mumbai, 791 new coronavirus cases were reported with 20 deaths in the last 24 hours taking the death toll to 528 in the area. The area has now recorded 14,355 cases of the virus.

As the number of cases spiraled in the state, Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray requested for central forces during his video conference with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi while asserting that "police are under heavy pressure and their personnel are also getting infected."

In Uttar Pradesh, 109 more cases surfaced on Monday taking the number of cases in the state to 3,573 which includes 80 deaths.

Five people died in West Bengal with 124 new cases being reported in the state. The total number of coronavirus cases in the state has now risen to 2063.

In Jharkhand, 161 cases have been reported with 80 active cases, the state health department said.

India's national capital recorded no new containment zone with the number of zones totalling 81.

Gujarat too recorded a spurt in cases with 347 new cases taking the number of cases to 8,542. Five hundred and thirteen people have died due to the virus in the state.
