Maharashtra, Gujarat on alert over cyclonic storm Nisarga

The Gujarat government today ordered the evacuation of people living in low-lying areas and deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in various districts with cyclonic storm Nisarga predicted to hit the area.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that a cyclonic storm may occur in the next 36 hours.

The weather department said the cyclonic storm will cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts late in the evening on June 3.

National Disaster Response Force has also been deployed in Maharashtra in Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg.

"It is very likely to move nearly northwards initially till June 2 morning and then recurve north-northeastwards and cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar (Raigad, Maharashtra) and Daman during evening/night of June 3," the IMD said.

The IMD said it will "impact" Mumbai as well. The weather forecaster added that on June 3 when it passes the coast, the wind speeds will be 105-110 kmph accompanied by heavy rains in south Gujarat and coastal Maharashtra.
