Lok Sabha to take up discussion on triple talaq bill today

A discussion on the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2018, or the triple talaq bill, is expected to take place in Lok Sabha today during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament, news agency ANI reported.

The fresh bill aims to make the practice of instant triple talaq among Muslims an offence under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) with the provision of three-year jail for the husband.

BJP on Tuesday issued a whip to its Lok Sabha members to be present in the House on December 27 when the bill will be taken up for discussion and is likely to be put to vote.

The three-line whip is a strict instruction to the Members of Parliament from their respective party which necessitates their presence in the House and participates in the voting.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the Centre was committed to making a law on triple talaq despite facing "hurdles" from "hardliners" and opposition parties.  The prime minister also talked about his government's resolve to make the law on triple talaq.

The bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 17. It aims to replace the ordinance issued by the Central government in September, banning the instant triple talaq.
