Story highlights
Cyclonic storm Nisarga, set to make landfall at Alibaug in Raigad district in the afternoon, hovered over the Arabian Sea around 165 km south-southwest of the coastal town and 215 km south-southwest of Mumbai at dawn.
Cyclone Nisarga centred in Pune, the IMD has informed.
The IMD said Cyclone Nisarga has crossed over to Raigad district with wind speed of 90-100kmph in Mumbai and Thane accompanied by heavy rainfall.
Flight operations at the Mumbai airport will remain shut till 7 pm on Wednesday as a preventive step due to the ongoing landfall of cyclone Nisarga, Mumbai International Ltd (MIAL) said.
Cyclone Nisarga blew in from the Arabian Sea, making landfall at the coastal town Alibaug at around 12.30 pm and the process will finish by 4 pm, officials said.
India's Metorlogical Department said that the rear part of the wall cloud region is still over the sea and the landfall process will be completed in one hour.
"Its current intensity near the centre is 90-100 kmph to 110kmph. It will move northeastwards and weaken into a cyclonic storm during next 6 hrs."
