The Indian Space Research Organisation is counting down to the launch of India's second mission to the Moon, Chandrayaan-2. The spacecraft, carrying an orbiter, lander and a rover, will be launched on a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-MkIII between on July 15 a 2.51 am IST from a launch pad in Sriharikota.The Chandrayaan-2 integrated module is expected to reach the Moon's orbit by September, and make a landing on 6 September.

Chandrayaan-2 costs nearly Rs 1000 crore
According to reports, India has spent about Rs 978 crore ($142 million) to get Chandrayaan-2 ready for the 384,400 kilometres (around 240,000 miles) trip from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre to the scheduled landing on the lunar South Pole on September 6. The nearly Rs 1000 crore cost includes Rs 603 crore mission cost and Rs 375 crore for its launch, the cost of GSLV MK III.
Chandrayaan II a very important and prestigious mission: ISRO Chairman
Chandrayaan II is a very important and prestigious mission for India, said ISRO chairman Kailasavadivoo Sivan on Saturday ahead of the lunar mission's launch on Monday.The ISRO chairman on Saturday visited the Sri Venkateswara temple here.
Speaking to the media after visiting the temple, he said, "On Monday early morning at 2.51 am, we are going to launch the most important and prestigious mission, Chandrayaan II.
"A GSLV Mark III vehicle is going to be used for the mission and after a successful launch; it will take nearly two months to land on the moon at the South Pole," Sivan added.

Launch site: Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh
Objective: Chandrayaan-2 will help expand India's footprint in space, inspire a future generation of scientists, engineers, and explorers and surpass international aspirations. Chandrayaan-2 is an advanced version of the previous Chandrayaan-1 mission, which was launched about 10 years ago.

Chandrayaan-2 costs less than Hollywood blockbuster 'Avengers Endgame'
India's second Moon mission, Chandrayaan-2, has evoked great interest in Western media and scientific journals, with many saying the mission that costs less than half of the budget of Hollywood blockbuster "Avengers Endgame" will put India in league with lunar pioneers - the US, Russia and China.

Chandrayaan-2: A successor to Chandrayaan-1
Chandrayaan-2 is the successor mission of Chandrayaan-1 which was India's first mission to the moon. It operated for almost a year (between October 2008 and August 2009). The lunar orbiter is best known for helping to discover evidence of water molecules on the moon.
The 20-hour countdown for the July 15 early morning lift-off of India's heavy rocket nicknamed the 'Bahubali' carrying the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft began at 6.51 am on Sunday, a top official of the Indian space agency said.
