"Less than 6 hrs left for your deadline on the #Rafale JPC to run out," Rahul Gandhi tweeted to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Thursday.

"Young India is waiting. I hope you're busy convincing Modi Ji and Anil Ambani Ji about why they should listen to you & approve this!" the Congress president added.

The not-so-gentle "reminder" was to a suggestion that Rahul himself had made to Jaitley yesterday.

"Mr Jaitley, thanks for bringing the nation’s attention back to the GREAT #RAFALE ROBBERY! How about a Joint Parliamentary Committee to sort it out?" Rahul had tweeted Wednesday. "Problem is, your Supreme Leader is protecting his friend, so this may be inconvenient. Do check & revert in 24 hrs. We’re waiting!"

The Congress accuses the NDA government of paying more for the Rafale jets it is buying from France's Dassault than the deal originally brokered by the UPA. The Congress is therefore implying kickbacks.

Jaitley however said yesterday that the NDA is getting the Rafale jets 20% cheaper than the UPA was.

The reference to the "friend" was to Anil Ambani, whose Reliance Defence Ltd is the Indian partner in the deal. The earlier Indian partner had been the public-sector HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd) but it was suddenly replaced by Reliance Defence, which has no prior experience in the aerospace industry.

Reliance Defence was reportedly incorporated only a few days before it was handed the deal.
