Story highlights

Earlier the airport was scheduled to resume services on August 26.

Cochin International Airport will resume full-scale operations on August 29 after over two weeks. The airport was first closed on August 9, for a few hours, and then on August 15 in the wake of a deluge in Kerala.

Earlier the airport was scheduled to resume services on August 26 but further suspension of operations came over concerns expressed by stakeholders of airlines and ground staff, news agency ANI reported.

According to reports, nearly 90 per cent of ground staff of various airlines, as well as those at the CIAL, has been affected by the floods. The authorities have therefore decided to suspend the operations at the airport for three more days.

Meanwhile, floodwaters across Kerala have been receding as there was a let up in heavy rains last Monday onwards.

The disastrous floods claimed as many as 373 lives across the state taking a devastating turn earlier this month.

The shutters of nearly 33 dangerously full dams and reservoirs were opened for the first time in the history of Kerala in nearly a century.

State authorities have estimated a cumulative loss worth over Rs 21,000 crore in the catastrophe that was announced as 'calamity of severe nature' by the central government.
