Karunanidhi's demise creates political vacuum in Tamil Nadu

Karunanidhi's demise on August 7 closes a historic chapter in Tamil Nadu politics. The DMK leader, Tamil Nadu’s tallest political figure, passed away in Chennai’s Kauvery hospital. He was 94. 
 
Born as Daksinamoorthy on June 3, 1924 in Thirukkuvalai in Tamil Nadu, Karunanidhi's political journey began when he was just 14 - a legacy that went on for over half a century making him one of strongest political leaders in the country.
 
His demise opens doors to a number of players who will try their luck in the political stage of the state from here on out. 
 
Popularly known as Kalaingar, he was the other pole to AIADMK leader Jayalalitha, who passed away two years ago. They were veterans in the game and nobody could take Tamil Nadu and the two leaders for granted when they were around. 
 
With Karunanidhi's passing, the challenge for the DMK is expected to be full of pressure and turmoil as it was for the two veteran leaders. 
 
Supporters of his sons MK Stalin and MK Alagiri have often had tiffs. 
 
While Stalin is the heir apparent, he faces a tough challenge from his elder brother who commands good support in southern Tamil Nadu with him declaring that the local party cadres are in his support. 
 
Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi and the Maran brothers too have political ambitions.

Many players are waiting to try and fill up the political space. In 2017, when a truce was finally reached between the rival AIADMK factions, some anticipated in the merger a Narendra Modi-Amit Shah hand, and an attempt to bring the party closer to the NDA. 
 
The BJP has for long been seeking a foothold in Tamil Nadu and this political vacuum could be its best chance. 
 
The political stage could also witness the entry of any dramatis personae with actors Rajinikanth, Kamal Hassan and Sarathkumar in the line. But beyond the actors, national parties too are waiting in the wings.
